What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decode regularly spelled one-syllable words by matching letters and letter patterns to sounds. They blend the sounds into a whole word.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student reads unfamiliar CVC and other taught regular patterns accurately. The student attends to every sound instead of guessing from the first letter.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rely on pictures or sentence context before decoding. They may omit final sounds, reverse vowel sounds, or stop before blending.
How to Assess It
- Give ten unfamiliar regularly spelled one-syllable words using taught patterns. Ask students to sound through and read each word.
