What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students produce the primary or most frequent sound for each consonant. They connect one printed consonant with its usual spoken sound.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student sees consonants in mixed order and gives the expected sound accurately. The response uses sound rather than letter name.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may say letter names instead of sounds. They may add a vowel after a consonant or confuse visually similar letters.
How to Assess It
- Show mixed consonant cards in random order. Ask the student to produce each primary sound and match five sounds to picture beginnings.
