What Students Need to Do

Students decode one- and two-syllable words by using long and short vowels, common vowel teams, roots, prefixes, and suffixes. They also read common high-frequency words automatically.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can separate a two-syllable word, read each part, and blend the word accurately. The student recognizes common word parts and sight words without relying on a picture or guess.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use one vowel sound for every spelling or divide a two-syllable word in an unhelpful place. They may ignore a prefix or suffix and read only the root.

How to Assess It

Give students eight mixed words, including vowel-team, two-syllable, affixed, and high-frequency examples. Ask them to mark helpful parts and read each word aloud.

   Ask students to explain how reread and reader are alike, different, and decoded.
