What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize root words and common prefixes and suffixes. They use those parts to decode and understand longer words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student separates words such as replayed into prefix, root, and suffix when present. The student explains how each added part changes meaning or form.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat any beginning or ending letters as an affix. They may remove a suffix and produce a nonword or misidentify the root.
How to Assess It
- Give unhappy, reread, helpful, and jumped. Ask students to mark roots and affixes, read each word, and explain one meaning change.
