What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use common Greek and Latin roots and affixes to infer grade-level words. They combine a word part's known meaning with the other parts and the sentence context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies a useful root or affix and explains its contribution to the whole word. The student connects related words such as photograph and photosynthesis without assuming they mean the same thing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may define a word using only one root and ignore its other parts. They may assume similar-looking chunks share an origin or force a memorized meaning where context contradicts it.
How to Assess It
- Give students photograph, photosynthesis, and telephoto in sentences. Ask them to mark known parts, infer each meaning, and explain what photo contributes.
