What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use common Greek and Latin roots and affixes to infer grade-level words. They recognize related words and combine word-part meanings with context.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student identifies a meaningful root or affix and explains how it contributes to a word's definition. The student uses relationships such as audience, auditory, and audible to test the shared idea.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume every repeated letter sequence is a root or define the whole word from one part alone. They may confuse related words' parts of speech and use them interchangeably.

How to Assess It

Give students audience, auditory, and audible in sentences. Ask them to mark the shared root, infer each meaning, and explain the differences.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build Greek and Latin word-family maps with root meanings, affixes, parts of speech, and contextual definitions.

  2. Ask, ‘What meaning connects audience, auditory, and audible, and how does each word use it differently?’

  3. Play Root Evidence by matching unfamiliar words to roots, contextual clues, and complete definitions.

  4. Decode technical words from music or science materials using roots, affixes, and sentence context.
