What Students Need to Do: Students use common Greek and Latin roots and affixes to infer grade-level word meanings. They connect parts across words such as telegraph, photograph, and autograph while checking context.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student identifies a valid classical word part and explains its contribution to the whole word. The student combines multiple parts and contextual evidence instead of defining from one chunk alone.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume similar-looking letters form a meaningful root or treat every root relative as a synonym. They may memorize one part but ignore the other parts that change meaning.
How to Assess It: Give students telegraph, photograph, and autograph in sentences with root notes. Ask them to mark parts, infer meanings, and explain each combination.
