What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize root words and simple suffixes in printed words. They use the parts to read the word and notice changes in meaning or time.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student identifies run in runs and walk in walked, reads the full word, and explains the suffix. The root remains recognizable after the ending is added.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may remove any final letters as a suffix. They may read the root correctly but ignore the suffix sound and meaning.
How to Assess It
- Show runs, jumped, helping, and cats. Ask students to mark each root and suffix, read the word, and explain one ending.
