What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify common prefixes and suffixes and know their meanings. They use affixes to decode and interpret unfamiliar words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student separates a word into base and affix, reads it accurately, and explains the affix meaning. The resulting meaning fits the word’s context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may identify letter clusters as affixes when they are part of the base. They may know an affix definition but apply it mechanically in every word.
How to Assess It
- Give rewrite, impossible, careless, and preview in sentences. Ask students to mark affixes, explain meanings, and read each word.
