Virginia SOL 5.PS.1
SOL Standard (Knowledge and Skills Cluster)
The student will apply the data cycle (formulate questions; collect or acquire data; organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results) with a focus on line plots (dot plots) and stem-and-leaf plots.

Knowledge and Skills in This Standard
5.PS.1 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.
- 5.PS.1.a
Formulate questions that require the collection or acquisition of data.
- 5.PS.1.b
Determine the data needed to answer a formulated question and collect or acquire existing data (limited to 30 or fewer data points) using various methods (e.g.,...
- 5.PS.1.c
Organize and represent a data set using a line plot (dot plot) with a title, labeled axes, and a key, with and without the use of technology tools. Lines plots ...
- 5.PS.1.d
Organize and represent numerical data using a stem-and-leaf plot with a title and key, where the stems are listed in ascending order and the leaves are in ascen...
- 5.PS.1.e.i
describe the characteristics of the data represented in a line plot (dot plot) and stem-andleaf plot as a whole (e.g., the shape and spread of the data)
- 5.PS.1.e.ii
make inferences about data represented in line plots (dot plots) and stem-and-leaf plots (e.g., based on a line plot (dot plot) of the number of books students ...
- 5.PS.1.e.iii
identify parts of the data that have special characteristics and explain the meaning of the greatest, the least, or the same (e.g., the stem-and-leaf plot shows...
- 5.PS.1.e.iv
draw conclusions about the data and make predictions based on the data to answer questions
- 5.PS.1.e.v
solve single-step and multistep addition and subtraction problems using data from line plots (dot plots) and stem-and-leaf plots.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask a question, decide what data will answer it, and gather no more than 30 values. They organize the values in a line plot or stem-and-leaf plot. They describe patterns, make supported conclusions and predictions, and solve problems using the data.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students create accurate line plots and stem-and-leaf plots with titles, labels, ordered values, and clear keys. They identify clusters, gaps, repeated values, least and greatest values, and spread. They use the data to answer questions, make reasonable predictions, and solve addition or subtraction problems.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may omit repeated values, space dots unevenly, or forget that each dot represents one data point. They may reverse stems and leaves or leave them unsorted. They may also make claims about a whole population when the data came from a small sample.
How to Assess It
- Give the data 12, 14, 14, 17, 20, 21, 21, 23. Ask students to make a stem-and-leaf plot, find the spread, and write one supported conclusion.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs measure 20 classroom objects to the nearest centimeter, then build a class line plot with sticky notes.
Show a stem-and-leaf plot and ask, "What claim can you make, and which values support it?"
Play Plot Repair by giving groups flawed plots to correct, including missing titles, unordered leaves, skipped values, and incorrect keys.
Poll classmates about nightly reading minutes, graph the results, and predict how many students in another fifth-grade class might read over 20 minutes.
