What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read values and frequencies from line plots and stem-and-leaf plots. They use addition and subtraction to solve one-step and multistep questions, then explain their calculations orally or in writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student accurately reads each value and its frequency from either type of plot. They can combine selected values, compare totals, find differences, and explain each step using evidence from the plot.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count dots or leaves instead of using the values they represent. They may read 4 | 7 as 407 or 4.7 without checking the key. In multistep problems, students may add every value or stop after the first calculation.
How to Assess It
- Give students this stem-and-leaf plot: 2 | 3 5 8 and 3 | 1 1 6, with the key 2 | 3 = 23. Ask, “How much greater is the sum of the three largest values than the sum of the three smallest values? Show your work.”

Have students measure five classroom objects to the nearest centimeter, build a sticky-note dot plot, then write and solve two comparison questions.
Display a stem-and-leaf plot and ask, “Which two facts best summarize the data, and what plot evidence supports each fact?”
Pairs draw question cards, solve addition or subtraction problems from the same plot, and earn a point by checking each other’s evidence.
Use two weeks of daily rainfall data to make a dot plot, then compare weekly totals and explain the difference.
