Virginia SOL 3.PS.1.e.v

Math3rd GradeProbability and Statistics

The Standard

solve one- and two-step addition and subtraction problems using data from pictographs and bar graphs.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will apply the data cycle (formulate questions; collect or acquire data; organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results) with a focus on pictographs and bar graphs.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read values from pictographs and bar graphs, paying attention to keys and scales. They use those values to solve one-step and two-step addition or subtraction problems and explain their results.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students read the graph scale or pictograph key correctly. They choose addition and subtraction to solve one-step and two-step questions, then explain their answer with numbers from the graph.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count picture symbols instead of using the pictograph key. They may also subtract when a question asks for a total, or stop after one operation in a two-step problem.

How to Assess It

Give students a small bar graph and ask, “How many more votes did apples and bananas receive together than oranges?” Require an equation and a written answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs counters and a pictograph key, then have them build data displays and solve two-step questions about each other’s displays.

  2. Show a bar graph and ask, “What two-step question could you answer using these data?” Students write and trade questions.

  3. Play Graph Question Match by pairing equation cards, such as 12 + 8 − 7, with matching graph question cards.

  4. Graph class lunch choices, then calculate how many more students chose two popular options together than the least popular option.
