Virginia SOL 2.PS.1.e.i
The Standard
ask and answer questions about the data represented in pictographs and bar graphs (e.g., total number of data points represented, how many in each category, how many more or less are in one category than another). Pictograph keys will be limited to symbols representing 1, 2, 5, or 10 pieces of data and bar graphs will be limited to scales with increments in multiples of 1, 2, 5, or 10
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will apply the data cycle (pose questions; collect or acquire data; organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results) with a focus on pictographs and bar graphs.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read the key on a pictograph or the numbered scale on a bar graph. They find category amounts, totals, and how many more or fewer one category has.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use the key or scale to find each category’s value. They correctly state totals and differences, then support each answer with numbers from the graph.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count symbols instead of using the pictograph key. They may count grid lines rather than scale values on a bar graph. They may subtract incorrectly when finding how many more or fewer.
How to Assess It
- Show a pictograph with cats at four symbols and dogs at three symbols, where each symbol means two votes. Ask: How many votes total, and how many more votes did cats receive?

Ways to Teach It
Build a cube bar graph from a five-student color survey, then have pairs find category totals and differences.
Display two graph categories and ask, “Which has more, how many more, and what graph evidence proves it?”
Play Graph Question Swap, where partners write and trade total, category, and comparison questions about one graph.
Graph yesterday’s cafeteria choices, then ask students which item was most popular and how many more students chose it.
