Virginia SOL 2.PS.1.c
The Standard
Organize and represent a data set using a pictograph where each symbol represents up to 2 data points. Determine and use a key to assist in the analysis of the data.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will apply the data cycle (pose questions; collect or acquire data; organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results) with a focus on pictographs and bar graphs.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn category counts into a labeled pictograph. They choose whether each picture represents one or two data points, record that key, and use it to compare amounts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a key, label the categories, and draw the correct number of symbols for each count. They use the key to find totals and compare categories, including when a half-symbol represents one data point.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count the pictures instead of multiplying by the key. They may omit the key, change its value between categories, or use a whole picture when only one data point remains.
How to Assess It
- Give these results: cats 5, dogs 8, fish 3. Ask students to make a labeled pictograph with each picture worth 1 or 2, then state how many more students chose dogs than fish.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs category cards, counters, and picture cutouts, then have them sort the counters and build a pictograph with a key.
Show two pictographs of the same data with different keys, then ask students to explain why the number of pictures changes.
Play Pictograph Match by having students pair data table cards with graph cards and justify each match using the key.
Survey classmates about favorite playground activities, make a pictograph of the votes, and use it to select a class activity.
