Virginia SOL 4.PS.1.d.v

Math4th GradeProbability and Statistics

The Standard

solve single-step and multistep addition and subtraction problems using data from line graphs.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will apply the data cycle (formulate questions; collect or acquire data; organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results) with a focus on line graphs.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read values from a line graph and use them in addition and subtraction problems. They solve one-step and multistep questions, then explain their results aloud and in writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students read titles, axes, scales, and plotted values accurately. They add and subtract graph values through one or more steps, then explain their reasoning with equations, words, and correct units.

Common Misconceptions

Students may read the wrong axis, ignore the scale interval, or count grid lines instead of using labeled values. They may subtract in the wrong order or stop after one step in a multistep problem.

How to Assess It

Show a line graph with books read: Monday 12, Tuesday 18, Wednesday 15, Thursday 24. Ask, "How many more books were read Tuesday and Thursday together than Monday and Wednesday together? Show your equations and explain."

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs five temperature cards to plot on a taped floor graph, then have them solve two-step comparison questions.

  2. Display a weekly rainfall graph and ask, "Which two days had the greatest total rainfall, and how do you know?"

  3. Play Graph Question Swap: students write multistep questions from one line graph, trade cards, solve, and check each other's work.

  4. Use a local weather line graph to compare daily temperatures and calculate the total change across selected days.
