What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students make sense of one-step stories by deciding whether amounts are joined, separated, or combined as parts of a whole. They use objects, drawings, words, or equations to solve and explain their reasoning.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a matching model and operation for joining, separating, or finding a whole or part. They solve accurately within 20 and explain how their drawing, objects, or equation matches the situation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose an operation from a keyword instead of thinking about what happens in the story. They may subtract in the wrong order, miscount drawings, or write an equation that does not match their model.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Leo has 8 toy cars and gets 6 more. How many cars does he have now? Show a model, write an equation, and explain your answer.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs counters and a part-part-whole mat, then read story problems for them to build, solve, and explain.

  2. Ask students to draw and explain two different stories that match 9 + 4 = 13.

  3. Play Problem Match by having students pair story cards with the correct drawing and equation cards.

  4. Set up a class store where students add purchased items or subtract spent tokens, then record each transaction with an equation.
