Virginia SOL 2.CE.1.c

Math2nd GradeComputation and Estimation

The Standard

Represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep contextual problems (e.g., join, separate, part-part-whole, comparison) involving addition or subtraction of whole numbers where addends or minuends do not exceed 100.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will recall with automaticity addition and subtraction facts within 20 and estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep problems, including those in context, using addition and subtraction with whole numbers where addends or minuends do not exceed 100.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students make sense of story problems, decide whether to add or subtract, and solve each step in order. They show their thinking with objects, drawings, number lines, or equations. They justify the answer using the situation.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose the correct operation for each step and keep track of intermediate results. They use a drawing, number line, or equation that matches the situation. They explain why their answer makes sense.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose an operation from a keyword without considering what happens in the story. They may combine all numbers in a two-step problem or stop after the first step. Some write an equation that does not match their drawing or answer.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Mia has 38 stickers, gets 24 more, then gives away 17. How many stickers remain?” Require a model, two equations, and one sentence explaining the steps.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs 100 counters and story cards, then have them act out each event and record matching equations.

  2. Ask, “How does the story change if ‘gets 16 more’ becomes ‘gives away 16’?” Students explain in writing.

  3. Play Equation Match by pairing story cards with model and equation cards, then checking each match with a partner.

  4. Use a classroom supply order with item quantities, deliveries, and items used, then calculate how many supplies remain.
