Virginia SOL 4.CE.1.d
The Standard
Estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep contextual problems involving addition and subtraction with whole numbers where addends and minuends do not exceed 1,000,000.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep problems, including those in context, using addition and subtraction with whole numbers.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students interpret one-step and multistep situations with whole numbers up to one million. They estimate, write an equation or draw a model, calculate, and explain why the answer is reasonable.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the correct operations and solve accurately, including when regrouping across zeros. They show the situation with an equation or diagram and use an estimate to justify that the exact answer makes sense.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may combine every number given instead of deciding which amounts increase or decrease. They may reverse subtraction, regroup incorrectly across zeros, or round inconsistently. Some give an exact answer without using their estimate to check it.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “A library had 638,450 books, removed 27,985, and bought 46,700. Estimate, write an equation, solve, and explain why your answer is reasonable.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs number cards and place value mats to build, estimate, and solve two-step addition and subtraction stories.
Ask students to write which quantity changes first in a word problem and explain why they chose addition or subtraction.
Play Equation Match by pairing context cards with equations, estimates, and exact answers placed around the room.
Use a classroom event budget with planned costs, actual costs, and refunds to calculate the remaining money and check with estimation.
