Virginia SOL 4.CE.4.b
The Standard
Estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep contextual problems using addition and subtraction of decimals through the thousandths.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep problems, including those in context, using addition and subtraction of decimals through the thousandths, with and without models.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether a situation calls for addition, subtraction, or both. They estimate first, then use a model or written method to find the exact answer. They explain their steps and check that the result makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student aligns decimal points, uses placeholder zeros, and regroups accurately. They represent the situation with an equation or model and label the answer with the correct unit. Their estimate supports the exact answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may align the last digits instead of the decimal points or omit placeholder zeros. They may choose an operation from a keyword without considering the situation. Regrouping across the decimal point can also cause errors.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: A tank held 2.375 liters, received 1.86 liters, then used 0.925 liter. Estimate, write an equation, solve, and explain whether your answer is reasonable.

Ways to Teach It
Use decimal place-value mats and digit cards to build 1.246 + 0.587, regroup, and record each written step.
Ask students to explain why 3.8 + 0.427 cannot equal 0.465, using an estimate and place-value language.
Run a card sort matching story problems, estimates, equations, and exact answers, then have partners defend one match.
Use three daily rainfall readings to find a total, compare it with a weekly target, and explain the difference.
