Virginia SOL 4.CE.4
SOL Standard (Knowledge and Skills Cluster)
The student will estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep problems, including those in context, using addition and subtraction of decimals through the thousandths, with and without models.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students estimate and calculate sums and differences with decimals through the thousandths. They solve one-step and multistep problems, show the quantities with models or equations, and justify whether answers are reasonable.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students align decimal points, regroup correctly, and find accurate sums and differences. They use a model, equation, or standard algorithm and compare the result with an estimate. They can explain each step in a contextual problem.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often align the last digits instead of aligning decimal points. They may treat tenths, hundredths, and thousandths like whole numbers or omit placeholder zeros. In multistep problems, they may choose operations without checking what the question asks.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A trail is 3.475 miles long. Mia walks 1.268 miles before lunch and 1.507 miles after lunch. Estimate, find the distance remaining, and explain why your answer is reasonable.

Ways to Teach It
Use place-value mats and decimal number cards to model 2.375 + 1.408, then record the matching standard algorithm.
Ask students to explain why 4.2 minus 1.875 requires writing 4.200 before subtracting.
Play Decimal Target, where pairs draw decimal cards and add or subtract to get closest to a target number.
Give students grocery prices with three decimal places and have them estimate and calculate the cost of several items.
