Knowledge and Skills in This Standard
4.CE.1 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.
- 4.CE.1.a
Determine and justify whether an estimate or an exact answer is appropriate when solving contextual problems involving addition and subtraction with whole numbe...
- 4.CE.1.b
Apply strategies (e.g., rounding to the nearest 100 or 1,000, using compatible numbers, other number relationships) to estimate a solution for single-step or mu...
- 4.CE.1.c
Apply strategies (e.g., place value, properties of addition, other number relationships) and algorithms, including the standard algorithm, to determine the sum ...
- 4.CE.1.d

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students estimate and calculate sums and differences in one step and several step problems. They choose rounding, compatible numbers, place value strategies, or a written algorithm, then explain why their answer makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose an estimate or exact answer that fits the situation and explain their choice. They solve accurately, show each step, and describe the estimate as closer to, between, or a little more than a benchmark.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may round each number without considering whether the result should be higher or lower. They may choose an estimate when an exact count is needed, or lose track of regrouping and operation signs in problems with several steps.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A library owns 486,275 books, buys 38,950, and removes 12,680. Find an estimate and exact total, then explain which answer the inventory clerk needs.

Ways to Teach It
Build numbers with place value cards, estimate their sum, then solve exactly and compare the estimate with the exact answer.
Discuss this prompt: A school collected 248,760 cans and donated 96,845; should the principal report an estimate or exact amount, and why?
Play Estimate Match: students pair problem cards with rounded or compatible number estimates, then explain each match to a partner.
Use a class trip budget to calculate total costs, money left, and when an estimate is more useful than an exact amount.
