Math4th GradeComputation and Estimation

The Standard

Apply strategies (e.g., rounding to the nearest 100 or 1,000, using compatible numbers, other number relationships) to estimate a solution for single-step or multistep addition or subtraction problems with whole numbers, where addends or minuends do not exceed 10,000.*

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep problems, including those in context, using addition and subtraction with whole numbers.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students estimate sums and differences by rounding, using compatible numbers, or applying known number relationships. They choose a strategy, follow all steps, and explain why the estimate makes sense.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a useful strategy, estimate accurately, and keep track of each operation in a multistep problem. They explain their choices and check that the estimate fits the context.

Common Misconceptions

Students may round incorrectly, especially when a digit is exactly 5. They may find an exact answer instead of an estimate or use the wrong operation in a multistep problem. Some assume only one estimate can be reasonable.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “A library has 4,782 fiction books and 2,146 nonfiction books, then removes 935 damaged books. Estimate how many remain, show your strategy, and explain why your estimate is reasonable.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups number cards and a floor number line, then have students place each number, round it, and estimate a displayed sum or difference.

  2. Ask students to compare nearest-hundred rounding and compatible numbers for 3,847 + 2,126, then defend the more useful estimate in writing.

  3. In Estimate Match, students pair problem cards with estimate cards, then earn a point by naming and explaining the strategy used.

  4. Use a mock field trip budget, and have students estimate the money left after adding two costs and subtracting them from $10,000.
