Math4th GradeComputation and Estimation

The Standard

decimals do not exceed the thousandths

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep problems, including those in context, using addition and subtraction of decimals through the thousandths, with and without models.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students estimate decimal sums and differences by rounding or using compatible numbers. They find exact answers by aligning decimal points and using models or a written algorithm. They check that answers fit their estimates.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly add and subtract decimals with different numbers of decimal places. They choose a useful estimate, show accurate work, and use the estimate to check reasonableness.

Common Misconceptions

Students may line up the last digits instead of the decimal points. They may forget placeholder zeros, regroup incorrectly across the decimal, or treat an estimate as the exact answer.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Estimate 4.782 − 1.956, find the exact difference, then explain in one sentence why the answer is reasonable.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs place-value mats and digit cards to build, add, and regroup decimals such as 2.347 and 1.586.

  2. Ask students to compare rounding and compatible-number estimates for 6.238 + 2.761, then defend which estimate is more useful.

  3. Play Decimal Target: students draw digit cards, create two decimals, and add or subtract to get closest to a target.

  4. Use two race times recorded to the thousandth of a second, then estimate and calculate the difference between them.
