Virginia SOL 5.CE.3.c.i
The Standard
quotients do not exceed four digits with or without a decimal point
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step and multistep problems, including those in context, using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with decimal numbers.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students estimate a quotient before calculating it. They divide whole numbers and decimals using place-value strategies and the standard algorithm. They explain why the quotient is reasonable and verify it with multiplication.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students estimate before dividing and use the estimate to judge their answer. They accurately find quotients such as 1,248 or 7.35 using a clear strategy or the standard algorithm. They check their work with multiplication.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may place the decimal point incorrectly or ignore it during division. They may stop when a remainder appears instead of adding zeros to continue. Some accept an unreasonable quotient without comparing it to an estimate.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to estimate, then use the standard algorithm to solve 46.8 ÷ 6. Have them check the quotient by multiplying it by 6.

Ways to Teach It
Build 8.4 with base-ten blocks, share it equally among four groups, and connect the model to 8.4 ÷ 4 = 2.1.
Ask, “Which estimate fits 63.6 ÷ 8: 0.8, 8, or 80?” Students defend their choice using multiplication.
Play Quotient Match: pairs connect division cards, estimate cards, and exact quotient cards, then verify each set with multiplication.
Give a $52.50 restaurant bill split among six people; students estimate, calculate each share, and check that the shares total $52.50.
