Math3rd GradeComputation and Estimation

The Standard

Represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step contextual problems that involve multiplication and division of whole numbers through 10 × 10.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will recall with automaticity multiplication and division facts through 10 × 10; and represent, solve, and justify solutions to single-step contextual problems using multiplication and division with whole numbers.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide whether a one-step situation calls for multiplication or division. They show the situation with equal groups, an array, or an equation, solve it, and explain why the answer makes sense.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose the correct operation and solve accurately using facts through 10 by 10. Their drawing, equation, answer, and written explanation all match the situation. They label the answer with the correct unit.

Common Misconceptions

Students may multiply any two numbers they see, even when the situation calls for division. They may reverse the dividend and divisor or give an answer without units. Some draw a model that does not match their equation.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “A teacher puts 42 pencils equally into 7 cups. Draw a model, write an equation, solve, and explain your choice.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs 30 counters and 5 cups, then have them model equal groups, write a division equation, and explain the quotient.

  2. Compare “6 boxes with 4 markers each” and “24 markers shared among 6 boxes,” then write how the equations match each story.

  3. Teams match story cards with array cards, equation cards, and answer cards, earning a point only when all four pieces agree.

  4. Have students find how many napkins are needed for 7 lunch tables with 4 seats each, then justify their calculation.
