Virginia SOL 5.PS.1.b
The Standard
Determine the data needed to answer a formulated question and collect or acquire existing data (limited to 30 or fewer data points) using various methods (e.g., polls, observations, measurements, experiments).
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will apply the data cycle (formulate questions; collect or acquire data; organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results) with a focus on line plots (dot plots) and stem-and-leaf plots.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide exactly what information will answer a given question. They gather up to 30 data points through a poll, observation, measurement, experiment, or reliable existing source.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain what each data point represents and why it answers the question. They choose a suitable method and record up to 30 data points with consistent labels and units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may collect interesting information that does not answer the question. They may mix units, change the survey wording, or record the same person twice.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Ask, “What is the hand span of students in our group?” Have students name the needed data, choose a method, and record six measurements.

Ways to Teach It
Have groups measure 10 paper airplane flights, recording each distance in centimeters on a labeled data table.
Ask, “How could we find the most common way students travel to school?” Students name the data, source, and collection method.
Play a card match game connecting question cards with suitable data, units, sources, and collection methods.
Use a weather website to collect 14 daily high temperatures and decide whether the data answer a question about recent weather.
