Virginia SOL 4.PS.1.b
The Standard
Determine the data needed to answer a formulated question and collect or acquire existing data (limited to 10 or fewer data points) using various methods (e.g., observations, measurements, experiments).
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will apply the data cycle (formulate questions; collect or acquire data; organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results) with a focus on line graphs.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify what information will answer a given question. They choose a suitable source or method, then gather and record up to 10 accurate values.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a question, students name the variable, units, and who or what will be studied. They collect a matching set of values and keep labels, units, and procedures consistent.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may collect interesting facts that do not answer the question or confuse categories with measurements. They may omit units, switch tools, count an item twice, or gather the wrong number of values.
How to Assess It
- Give each pair a cup of water, one ice cube, and a thermometer. Ask what happens to the temperature over five minutes, then have students record temperatures at minutes 1 through 5.

Ways to Teach It
Pairs measure a cup of ice water once each minute for eight minutes and record time and temperature in a labeled table.
Ask, “What must we record to learn whether a plant grows during one week?” Students defend the timing, unit, and measuring tool.
Play Data Plan Match: teams pair question cards with variable, unit, and collection method cards, then explain each match.
Students copy seven daily high temperatures from a weather site, recording date and degrees to decide whether the week warmed or cooled.
