Virginia SOL 5.PS.1.e.iv
The Standard
draw conclusions about the data and make predictions based on the data to answer questions
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will apply the data cycle (formulate questions; collect or acquire data; organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results) with a focus on line plots (dot plots) and stem-and-leaf plots.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read line plots and stem-and-leaf plots to identify patterns, clusters, gaps, and unusual values. They use that evidence to answer questions, draw conclusions, and make reasonable predictions orally and in writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately describe patterns, clusters, gaps, and extreme values in either plot. They answer questions with supported conclusions and make reasonable predictions based on the displayed data.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the tallest stack as the greatest value instead of the most frequent value. They may misread place value in a stem-and-leaf plot or make predictions without using the data.
How to Assess It
- Give students a stem-and-leaf plot of 12 quiz scores. Ask them to write one conclusion and one prediction, each supported by a specific value or frequency from the plot.

Ways to Teach It
Have students measure 15 classroom pencils, build a line plot with sticky dots, then write two conclusions from the lengths.
Show a stem-and-leaf plot of reading minutes and ask, "What can we conclude, and which values support your claim?"
Play Plot Detective by giving pairs data plots and claim cards to sort as supported, unsupported, or impossible to determine.
Use a line plot of daily temperatures to predict tomorrow's range, then compare predictions and explain which data points guided them.
