The Standard

draw conclusions about the data and make predictions based on the data.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will apply the data cycle (pose questions; collect or acquire data; organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results) with a focus on object graphs, picture graphs, and tables.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read object graphs, picture graphs, and simple tables to explain what the data shows. They use counts and comparisons to state a conclusion and make a reasonable prediction.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can identify categories with more, fewer, most, least, or equal amounts. The student states a conclusion and makes a reasonable prediction using numbers from the display.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count grid spaces instead of objects or pictures. They may confuse most and least, ignore category labels, or make predictions based on personal preference instead of the data.

How to Assess It

Show a picture graph with 5 apples, 3 bananas, and 2 oranges. Ask students to write one conclusion, predict the next student's choice, and support both with numbers.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students sort ten linking cubes by color, build an object graph, then state one conclusion and predict the next cube color.

  2. Display a pet picture graph and ask, “What do you know, and what might happen next? Use one number as evidence.”

  3. Play Graph Detective: partners draw conclusion cards, such as most, least, or equal, and find matching evidence in three displays.

  4. Track five days of classroom weather in a table, then predict the sixth day and explain which counts support the prediction.
