Virginia SOL K.PS.1.g.ii

MathKindergartenProbability and Statistics

The Standard

draw conclusions about the data and make predictions based on the data.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will apply the data cycle (pose questions; collect or acquire data; organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results) with a focus on object graphs and picture graphs.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students look at object graphs and picture graphs to tell what the data shows. They use patterns in the graph to make a sensible prediction and explain their thinking.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly state which group has more, fewer, or the same number. They make a reasonable prediction and point to graph data that supports it.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the tallest group without counting or checking the graph key. They may give a personal guess instead of using the displayed data to support a prediction.

How to Assess It

Show a picture graph of pet choices. Ask, “What can you conclude, and what would you predict the next student will choose? Explain using the graph.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students build an object graph with favorite-fruit counters, then tell one conclusion and predict the class's next choice.

  2. Show a picture graph and ask, “What do you know, and what might happen next? Point to evidence for each answer.”

  3. Play Graph Detective: partners draw conclusion cards, find matching evidence on a graph, and explain their reasoning.

  4. Graph daily weather icons for one week, then predict the next day's weather using the class data.
