Virginia SOL S.2

S.2 is a Standards of Learning history and social science standard. These are the skills expectations under it.

  viewing and exploring information sources, including, but not limited to artifacts, primary and secondary sources, charts, graphs, and diagrams

What Students Need to Do

Students examine objects, images, maps, charts, and short texts for information. They ask questions, organize details, compare ideas, and explain causes and results. They use evidence and social studies words to support conclusions and choices.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can read a simple source, map, or graph and identify useful details. The student can place events in order, compare information, and explain a conclusion with evidence. The student also listens respectfully and makes responsible group decisions.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat every source as equally reliable or confuse an observation with a guess. They may reverse causes and results, read timelines out of order, or use map symbols without checking the key.

How to Assess It

Give students a historical photo and a simple map. Ask them to write one observation, one question, one map based conclusion, and the evidence for that conclusion.

   Give pairs a photograph, replica object, map, and short paragraph to sort by source type and record one fact from each.

   Ask, "What can this photograph tell us, and what can it not tell us?" Students answer using two visible details.

3. 03

   Play a cause and result matching game with event cards, then have students explain one match using because.

4. 04

   Compare two classroom supply choices by price and usefulness, then let groups choose one and explain the tradeoff.
