What Students Need to Do: Students ask relevant questions about pictures, objects, maps, or short texts. They use details from the source to make a reasonable conclusion and explain their evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can ask a focused question that helps uncover more information. The student can identify useful clues, draw a conclusion, and explain how the clues support it.
Common Misconceptions: Students may ask questions unrelated to the source or treat a guess as a conclusion. They may rely on one detail, ignore conflicting clues, or give an answer without evidence.
How to Assess It: Show a historical photograph and ask students to write one question, list two clues, and complete: “I conclude ___ because ___.”

Lesson moves

Place a mystery object in a bag, let students examine it, record observations, ask questions, and infer how someone used it.
Show an old classroom photograph and ask, “What can we conclude about school then, and which details support your conclusion?”
Play Clue Collector by giving pairs source cards and points for each relevant question, accurate clue, and supported conclusion.
Examine a map of the school neighborhood, then ask students what people need nearby and which map details support their ideas.
