What Students Need to Do: Students ask relevant questions about people, places, objects, and events. They use words such as who, what, where, when, why, and how to learn more.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can study a picture, object, or short story and ask two related questions. They can explain what they want to find out and listen for an answer.
Common Misconceptions: Students may make a statement instead of asking a question. They may ask an unrelated question, repeat a classmate’s question, or assume every question has one clear answer.
How to Assess It: Show a photograph of a community event. Ask each student to state one question about the photograph and name one detail that prompted it.

Lesson moves

Place a mystery object in a bag, let students examine it by touch, then ask questions to identify it.
Show an old classroom photograph and ask, “What do you notice, and what do you wonder?”
Roll a cube labeled who, what, where, when, why, and how, then ask a matching question about a picture.
Invite the school nurse to visit, and have students prepare and ask questions about the nurse’s work.
