What Students Need to Do: Students ask clear questions about people, places, events, pictures, maps, and objects. They use who, what, when, where, why, and how to learn more.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a picture, object, or short story, a student asks at least two relevant questions. The student listens to new information and asks a useful follow-up question.
Common Misconceptions: Students may give a statement instead of asking a question. They may ask unrelated questions or repeat what they already know. Some think every question has one correct answer.
How to Assess It: Show a photograph of a community event. Ask each student to say or write one fact question and one why or how question.

Lesson moves

Place an unfamiliar household object in a bag, let students examine it, then record their questions before revealing its use.
Show a photograph of a busy street and ask, "What do you notice, and what do you still wonder?"
Play Question Word Toss by tossing a ball and asking a relevant question using the word called by the teacher.
Have students interview a school worker using two prepared questions about the worker's job and one follow-up question.
