What Students Need to Do: Students notice details in sources and identify what they want to know. They ask clear questions that can be investigated. They compare information, explain their thinking, and revise questions when new evidence appears.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can move beyond simple fact questions to ask how, why, or what changed. The student selects useful evidence, considers more than one viewpoint, and explains a reasonable conclusion.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat any question as useful, even when it is too broad or unrelated to the source. They may confuse an opinion with evidence or accept the first answer they find. Some think questions have only one correct answer.
How to Assess It: Show a historical photograph and ask: “Write one question that requires analysis, then name two details you would use to investigate it.” Check that the question cannot be answered with yes or no.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a historical photo, map, and three sticky notes; students record observations, then write one question each source raises.
Ask, “Which question would lead to the strongest investigation, and why?” Students defend a choice using details from a shared source.
Play Question Ladder: teams revise a yes-or-no question twice until it requires evidence, comparison, or explanation.
Use a local park proposal or school rule; students list stakeholders, ask questions, and identify information needed before deciding.
