What Students Need to Do: Students move from noticing a geographic pattern or problem to asking a focused question about it. They use maps, data, images, and written sources to test possible answers, compare views, and support a conclusion.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can examine a map, chart, image, or short source and ask a focused question that calls for explanation or comparison. The student selects useful evidence, spots gaps or bias, and adjusts an answer when new evidence appears.
Common Misconceptions: Students may write a topic or observation instead of a question. They often ask questions answered by one fact, or questions so broad that evidence cannot settle them. Some accept the first explanation and ignore evidence that points another way.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Give students a map showing uneven access to clean water. Ask them to write one analytical question and name two sources they would use to answer it.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a map, photo, and data table, then have them sort question cards and rewrite two weak questions.
Show a population map and ask, “What pattern do you notice, what might explain it, and what evidence would test your idea?”
Play Question Ladder: teams turn a recall question into a how question, a why question, and an evidence-based challenge.
Use a local news story to identify the claim, list missing information, and write one question for a reporter or official.
