What Students Need to Do: Students ask clear questions about people, places, events, and sources. They examine details, explain their thinking, and use evidence to consider possible answers.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can ask an open-ended question that leads to investigation. The student can separate facts from guesses and explain which source details support an answer.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat guesses as facts or ask questions that can be answered with one word. They may rely on the first source they see or ignore evidence that challenges their idea.
How to Assess It: Show a photograph of a historical classroom. Ask students to write one observation, one open-ended question, and one source they could use to investigate it.

Lesson moves

Place an unfamiliar household object in a bag, reveal it, and have students record observations, questions, and evidence-based guesses.
Display a historical photograph and ask, "What do you notice, what do you wonder, and which detail shaped your question?"
Play Question Sort by having teams classify question cards as factual, open-ended, opinion-based, or unclear, then revise two unclear questions.
Have students investigate a proposed playground change by questioning classmates, reviewing a simple map, and recommending an option with evidence.
