What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare choices by naming the benefits and costs of each option. They make a choice and explain how limited money, time, or resources affected it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can list two possible choices, tell what is gained and given up, and select one. The student gives a reason tied to a need, goal, or limit.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every choice has one correct answer or that cost only means money. They may name what they gain but overlook what they give up.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit ticket: “You have $5. Choose a book or a snack. Name one benefit, one cost, and explain your choice.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 10 counters and picture cards with prices, then have them choose purchases and explain what they left behind.
Ask students to write: “Would you spend recess drawing or playing tag, and what would you gain and give up?”
Play Choice Corners by labeling room corners with options, reading a situation, and having students move and defend their choice.
Plan a class party with a fixed budget, comparing food, decorations, and games before voting on how to spend the money.
