What Students Need to Do: Students compare two choices using simple facts such as cost, usefulness, and available resources. They choose one option and explain what they must give up.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given two options, students can use a picture chart to compare them and make a reasonable choice. They can state a clear reason and name the option not chosen.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think they can choose everything even when money or supplies are limited. They may pick a favorite without considering cost, need, or usefulness.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “Mia has $2 and needs to write. Should she buy a $2 pencil or a $2 sticker?” Students circle one and draw or dictate why.

Lesson moves

Give pairs three tokens and priced picture cards, then have them buy one item and name what they left behind.
Ask, “Would you choose a new crayon or a small toy for class, and why?” Students draw and dictate their answer.
Play Choice Mat: reveal one need card and two item cards, then students place the better option on the choose side.
Use a grocery flyer to choose one fruit under $4 for a class snack, considering price and how many students it serves.
