What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students compare choices with a simple decision chart that lists goals, costs, and benefits. They identify what encourages each choice and predict likely results before choosing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students complete a decision chart accurately and select the option that best meets stated goals. They explain one incentive, one trade-off, and one likely consequence of their choice.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think incentives are always money or prizes, and that consequences are always negative. They may choose a favorite option without comparing costs, benefits, or trade-offs.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: You have $20 for five classroom books or one playground ball. Use a decision chart, choose one, and explain an incentive and consequence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups 20 tokens and a class party menu, then have them use a decision chart to select food, games, and decorations.

  2. Ask students to write which would encourage them to save allowance instead of spending it, then explain one consequence of each choice.

  3. Play Choice Card Challenge, where pairs draw budget problems, compare two options, and earn points for naming incentives and consequences.

  4. Provide two grocery ads and a $15 budget, then have students choose items for a picnic and defend their choices.
