What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare options by listing costs, benefits, and what they would give up. They choose one option and explain how incentives may shape the choice and its results.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can complete a decision grid and rank the options. The student names an incentive, identifies the opportunity cost, and predicts one positive and one negative consequence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat costs as money only and miss time, effort, or lost opportunities. They often confuse an incentive that shapes a choice with a consequence that follows it. They may list only positive results.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “You have $20 and can buy a game or save for a bicycle.” Students list costs and benefits, choose, name an incentive, and state what they give up.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups 20 tokens and price cards for class party supplies; they build a budget, record tradeoffs, and defend their purchases.
Ask, “Should our class spend $50 on books or recess equipment?” Students write a claim using one incentive and two consequences.
Play Choice Challenge: teams draw scenario and incentive cards, complete a decision grid, then earn a point for each supported consequence.
Compare two grocery ads for the same breakfast items; students choose where to shop and calculate money saved and travel time lost.
