What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name a choice, list two options, and compare the benefits and costs of each one. They choose an option and give a clear reason.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can use a simple choice chart without help. The student stays within a set budget and explains what was given up.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think they can buy every item or spend more money than they have. They may choose only by preference without comparing price, usefulness, or what they must give up.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “You have $3. A pencil costs $3 and a sticker costs $2. Choose one and explain your decision.”

Ask students to write: “Would you buy a toy or save your money? Give one reason for your choice.”
Play Choice Card Match, where students match budget cards to affordable item cards and explain each choice.
Use a grocery ad and a $5 budget to choose one snack, compare prices, and name what cannot be purchased.
