What Students Need to Do: Students put events, steps, or facts in an order that makes sense. They use time words, timelines, numbered steps, or labeled groups to show relationships.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given mixed-up details, a student places them correctly and explains each choice. The student chooses a timeline, list, or labeled groups to present information clearly.
Common Misconceptions: Students may follow where events appear on a page instead of when they happened. They may confuse before and after, or group facts by shared words instead of meaning.
How to Assess It: Give students four shuffled picture cards showing how a seed grows. Ask them to number the cards and label them first, next, then, and last.

Lesson moves

Give pairs six picture cards from a familiar story to arrange on a desk, then have them add first, next, and last labels.
Ask students how the meaning would change if the ending came first, then have them defend one event placement with evidence.
Play Timeline Relay, where teams race to place event cards in order, then earn a point by correcting another team's sequence.
Have students make a morning routine chart with numbered steps and explain how changing the order could cause a problem.
