What Students Need to Do: Students put pictures, events, or steps in a logical order. They group related details and use words such as first, next, and last.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student independently orders three or four events and explains the order. The student sorts related pictures under clear headings and explains each choice.
Common Misconceptions: Students may order pictures by size or position instead of by what happened. They may confuse first and last or place unrelated details in the same group.
How to Assess It: Give students four picture cards showing a child getting ready for school and six cards to sort into school and home groups. Ask them to order, sort, and explain one choice.

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards showing how to plant a seed, then have them arrange and retell the steps.
Read a short story and ask, "What happened first, next, and last?" Record student answers beside three labeled boxes.
Play Human Timeline by giving four students event cards and asking the class to place them in order.
Use photo cards from the class schedule, then order them and sort each activity into morning or afternoon.
