Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students look closely at objects, pictures, simple charts, graphs, and diagrams. They notice details and use those details to answer questions about people, places, or events.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name what they see and point to evidence in the source. They can explain one fact shown by a picture, object, chart, graph, or diagram.
Common Misconceptions: Students may guess from prior knowledge instead of using visible evidence. They may treat drawings as facts, misread graph symbols, or confuse what they observe with what they think happened.
How to Assess It: Show a photograph and a three-column picture graph. Ask, “What is one fact you learned from each source, and what detail proves it?”

Lesson moves

Place an old classroom object in a mystery bag, then let students examine it and draw two details they notice.
Show a historical photograph and ask, “What do you see, and what does it help us learn about life long ago?”
Play Source Match by pairing picture cards with an artifact, photograph, chart, graph, or diagram label.
Study a cafeteria lunch graph and have students tell which food was chosen most and how they know.
