Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students inspect objects, pictures, short texts, charts, graphs, and diagrams. They notice details, ask questions, and explain what each source teaches about people, places, or events.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student finds a fact in a source and points to the detail that supports it. The student can explain how an object, picture, or chart provides information.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat guesses as facts or focus only on the most noticeable detail. They may overlook titles, labels, symbols, and keys. They may also assume every source tells the whole story.
How to Assess It: Show an old classroom photograph and a simple pictograph of school transportation. Ask, “Name one fact from each source and point to the detail that supports it.”

Lesson moves

Place a mystery object in a bag, let students examine it, then list three observations and one question.
Show a historical photo and ask, “What do you notice, what do you wonder, and which detail supports your idea?”
Have teams match six cards, an object, letter, textbook page, chart, graph, and diagram, to source labels.
Use a cafeteria lunch graph to ask, “Which meal was chosen most, and what part of the graph proves it?”
