What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine objects, pictures, short accounts, and visual data displays for details. They ask who made each source, what it shows, and what they can learn from it.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can describe a source, identify useful details, and make a reasonable conclusion supported by evidence. They can tell whether an account came from a witness or was created later.

Common Misconceptions

Students may state guesses as facts without naming evidence. They may think every old item is a firsthand source or overlook titles, labels, keys, and scales on visuals.

How to Assess It

Show a historic classroom photo and a simple chart of school supplies. Ask students to write one fact from each source and circle the evidence that supports it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a replica household object to inspect, sketch, and explain using two visible clues.

  2. Read a short diary entry and textbook paragraph, then ask, "What can each source tell us about school long ago?"

  3. Play a source sort with cards labeled object, witness account, later account, chart, graph, and diagram.

  4. Graph how classmates travel to school, then use the graph to write two true statements about the class.
