What Students Need to Do: Students place events in the order they happened and group facts that belong together. They use words such as first, next, then, and last to explain their thinking.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can arrange picture cards or simple facts in a logical order without help. The student can sort related details into labeled groups and explain each choice.
Common Misconceptions: Students may place events in reading order instead of thinking about when they happened. They may treat the most exciting event as first or group facts by matching pictures rather than meaning.
How to Assess It: Give students four picture cards showing a class election. Ask them to number the cards in order, then label each as before voting, voting, or after voting.

Lesson moves

Have students arrange picture cards showing a trip to the library, then glue them in order on a paper timeline.
Ask, “What happens before, during, and after lunch?” and have students draw or write one event for each part.
Play a card sort game where teams place community event cards in order and group matching facts under people, places, or actions.
Use a grocery receipt and shopping pictures to sort items by type, then discuss the order of steps during a store visit.
