S.K is a Standards of Learning history and social science standard. These are the skills expectations under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students examine objects, pictures, maps, charts, and diagrams to find information. They ask questions, sequence events, compare details, explain causes and effects, make simple choices, and use social studies words.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students point to evidence in a source and explain what it shows. They can read a simple map or chart, order events, compare ideas, explain a result, and participate respectfully.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat every source as fully accurate or make guesses without pointing to evidence. They may reverse cause and effect, confuse map symbols with real objects, or think respectful disagreement means always agreeing.

How to Assess It

Give each student a school map, a playground photo, and three cleanup picture cards. Ask them to identify one map feature, cite one photo detail, sequence the cards, and explain one result.

   Set up a table with an old lunchbox, class photograph, simple map, and bar graph; students rotate and record one observation.

   Show two classroom photographs and ask students what is alike, what is different, and which details support their answers.

3. 03

   Play a picture-card relay where teams sequence three events, match each cause to an effect, and explain one match using a target word.

4. 04

   Give each group ten tokens and a classroom supply menu; groups choose purchases, explain tradeoffs, and practice respectful agreement.
