Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students name and explain key words from a social studies lesson. They use each word in an answer, sentence, or picture explanation that shows its meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly match lesson words to pictures, objects, and examples. They use words such as map, rule, past, need, and want accurately when explaining an idea.
Common Misconceptions: Students may repeat a word without understanding it. They may confuse related words, such as need and want, or use a familiar everyday meaning instead of the lesson meaning.
How to Assess It: Give each student one lesson word and three picture cards. Ask, "Which picture matches your word, and how do you know?"

Lesson moves

Have students sort picture cards under labeled mats for needs, wants, rules, maps, past, and present.
Ask, "Which classroom rule helps us learn, and why?" Require students to use the word rule in their answer.
Play vocabulary charades by having students act out or point to clues for words drawn from a bag.
Walk through the school and photograph examples of rules, maps, workers, and places, then label them together.
